Built-in gas fire pit with fire glass on a stone patio near Lake Minnetonka

Gas Fire Pit Installation in Minnetonka & Lake Minnetonka

Built-in gas fire pits with instant flame, zero smoke, and no cleanup. Natural gas and propane options with stone, paver, and fire table designs.

Gas Fire Pits Are the Most Popular Outdoor Upgrade in Minnesota

Gas fire pits are the single most-requested feature in outdoor living designs across the Lake Minnetonka area. The American Society of Landscape Architects ranks fire features as the number one outdoor design trend for the fifth consecutive year, and among fire features, gas fire pits lead in popularity due to their convenience, safety, and clean operation. A built-in gas fire pit produces instant flames at the turn of a key or push of a button -- no kindling, no smoke, no ash cleanup.

For Minnesota homeowners, gas fire pits make outdoor living practical on cool spring and fall evenings when a wood fire feels like too much commitment for a 90-minute evening on the patio. Gas fire pits also avoid the burn-ban restrictions that occasionally affect wood burning during dry spells, meaning you can enjoy your fire pit regardless of weather conditions.

At Lifecycle Outdoor Services, we build custom gas fire pits integrated into paver patios, seat walls, and outdoor living areas. Every fire pit is connected to a permanent natural gas or propane supply line, eliminating the hassle and expense of refilling portable tanks. The burner, ignition system, gas valve, and fire media (fire glass, lava rock, or ceramic logs) are all selected for reliable outdoor performance in Minnesota's temperature extremes.

Round & Square Built-In Fire Pits

Built-in fire pits are constructed with concrete block or natural stone and permanently integrated into your patio surface. Round fire pits (36 to 48 inch diameter) create an intimate gathering circle, while square and rectangular designs (24x48 to 36x60 inches) work well as linear features between seating areas or along seat walls. We match the fire pit materials to your patio and surrounding hardscape for a seamless, integrated appearance.

Each built-in fire pit includes a stainless steel burner pan, electronic or match-lit ignition, a gas shutoff valve concealed within the structure, and your choice of fire glass, lava rock, or ceramic log media. Burner capacity ranges from 55,000 to 90,000 BTU -- enough to provide meaningful warmth on a Minnesota fall evening, not just decorative flame.

Fire Tables & Conversation Height

Fire tables combine a fire pit with a functional table surface, creating a dual-purpose feature that serves as both a warming element and a place to set drinks and plates. Built at coffee table height (18 to 22 inches) or dining table height (28 to 30 inches), fire tables are ideal for smaller patios where a separate fire pit and table would crowd the space.

We build custom fire tables with granite, concrete, or natural stone tops and matching base materials. The fire opening is centered or offset depending on table shape, with a wide enough perimeter ledge for practical use. Fire tables pair exceptionally well with outdoor kitchens and covered patio areas, creating a comfortable transition space between cooking and seating zones.

Natural Gas vs. Propane

01

Natural Gas (Recommended)

Natural gas fire pits connect to your home's existing gas supply via an underground line. The fuel supply is unlimited -- no tanks to refill, no running out mid-evening. Operating cost averages $0.50 to $1.50 per hour, less than half the cost of propane. We recommend natural gas for any property with an existing gas meter, which includes most homes in the Minnetonka area.

02

Propane

Propane fire pits use a buried or concealed tank (typically 100 to 500 gallons) that is refilled by a propane delivery service. Propane burns slightly hotter per BTU than natural gas, producing taller, more visible flames. We recommend propane for properties without natural gas service or where the fire pit is located far from the gas meter (100+ feet), making a gas line run cost-prohibitive.

03

Safety Features We Include

Every gas fire pit we install includes a CSA-certified burner assembly, a manual shutoff valve accessible within the fire pit structure, thermocouple flame sensing (shuts off gas if flame goes out), and proper ventilation openings in the base to prevent gas accumulation. Gas lines are pressure-tested before burial and inspected per Minnesota code.

Gas Fire Pit FAQ

Built-in gas fire pits in the Minnetonka area typically cost $4,000 to $12,000 including the fire pit structure, burner system, fire media, gas line installation, and connection. Simple round fire pits with stone veneer run $4,000 to $6,000. Custom fire tables and large rectangular features with premium stone and electronic ignition run $7,000 to $12,000. Most clients build fire pits as part of a larger patio project for the best overall value.

We do not recommend built-in gas fire pits directly on wood decks due to fire safety concerns and the weight of stone construction. Instead, we build gas fire pits on paver patios or concrete pads adjacent to decks, connected by matching materials for a seamless transition. This provides proper heat clearance and a non-combustible base while keeping the fire pit close to your deck seating area.

Yes, gas fire pits work in any temperature as long as the gas supply is active. Natural gas fire pits operate year-round. Propane fire pits may experience reduced pressure in extreme cold (below -10F) but function normally above that. Many of our clients use their gas fire pits on mild winter days. The fire pit structure is built with freeze-thaw rated materials that handle Minnesota's full temperature range.
